Words from the photographer –
Anja and Brian met in nursing school. Brian had been involved in a serious accident riding his bicycle to the very first day of class. He had to be rushed to the ER and evaluated for head trauma, he needed facial reconstructive surgery and had his jaw wired shut for 6 weeks. As he missed the first few days of school, he was switched into Anja’s lab group and they sat across from one another. “His first memory of me is an image of my name badge which we had to wear on our lab coats and he said, a bit muffled through his wired jaw “You look very pretty in your picture.”They quickly became friends bonding over their mutual love of the outdoors and their ridiculous nursing school adventures.
As their romance blossomed they spent all of their free time going on mini getaways up the coast and hiking as much as they could. This makes Brian’s proposal to Anja all the more spectacular! They were camping at Wrights Beach on the Sonoma Coast in their little 1960’s trailer, watching the sunset from just beyond the surf. Brian took out a small handmade box with an inlay of a very special flower on it, a mariposa lily, Anja’s favorite flower from the Sierra mountain range where they first said “I love you.” He opened the box and proposed to her with a beautiful family heirloom ring that originally belonged to his great grandmother. “Oh and I said, !#@*! Yes of course!” Being based in Los Angeles I was honored to be asked to travel up to Northern California to document their day. We chose these particular locations because they were all in Anja’s hometown and surrounding areas where she spent most of her childhood. Her mother April, who is a fabulous florist created Anja’s stunning bouquet.Spending the day with these two beautiful souls and the kindest of people, felt like I was with old friends.
